Signature storytelling to accelerate Black businesses

Challenge

As the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE) entered its fourth year of operations, leadership reflected with pride on having– through a pandemic– built and launched the nation’s largest nonprofit center dedicated exclusively to Black entrepreneurs. The number of entrepreneurs, corporations, and nonprofit partners RICE had attracted was growing steadily.

To move into its next phase of growth, though, the organization needed to begin telling its story in a more deliberate way, starting with communication of who they are, the work they do, and why that matters.

RICE reached out to Carr and Company for help crafting a compelling narrative that would reintroduce the organization to some and introduce it to many more.

Process

We started in conversation with RICE leadership to ground ourselves in context and backstory. Our dialogue with the team gave us perspective on what drives the organization and the details of how RICE serves stakeholders.


After digesting what we heard, we developed a narrative structure and decided how to frame the story. From there, we compiled data, collected entrepreneur stories, and created original copy that focused on key brand messages. In parallel, we developed an overall look and feel and applied design to create branded visuals and icons.

Outputs and Outcomes

The final product was The RICE Report: Volume I, an in-depth and highly visual document that introduces the organization, presents impact data and stories, and conveys the organization’s distinct spirit and energy.


With Volume I, we created RICE’s core, intro narrative and a tool for leadership and team members. The Report also elevated how RICE comes to life visually, with a more refined aesthetic.

Our collaboration with RICE established a signature platform for powerful brand storytelling.
